Response to Sarah:
Ummm.. its a pretty long story. But most importantly you have to make sure you are using the old blogger version. How do you tell? When you log into your account, the tabs at the top should say 'Posting, Settings, Template' and not 'Posting, Settings, Layout'.
If its not the old version, click 'Layout', and the click 'Edit HTML'. At the Edit HTML page, there should be two blue sentences at the bottom of the page. Click the one that says you convert back to the old blogger version.
After converting back to the old blogger version, go to www.blogskins.com and search for a blogskin you like. Enter a keyword in the search-bar eg. Dogs, so you blogskin will have dogs on it (:
After picking a skin you like, you should see on the skin page a rectangular button that says 'Blogger Main'. Click it and open the file (we'll call this File a). Then you will see a whole chunk of HTML codes.
Go back to the blogger page and click 'Template'. Delete all the codes that are already in the big white box. Copy paste the codes from the File A into the big white box.
Next, in the big white box start searching for the sections were you do editting. For example, most blogskin creators have a section that looks like:

And there will be other sections for links, tagboard, wishlist etc.
So after you finish editting (you can preview how your blog will look like during the process) click, Save changes made and you're done!
p.s if you need any help feel free to email me or ask me in class (:
